Dense Breast Tissue Can Obscure Mammogram Results

By Suzanne Makshanoff

I was diagnosed in my 30s and breast cancer didn’t run in my family. I performed a breast self-exam one day and found a lump. I had a mammogram, which was negative.  But negative didn’t mean the absence of cancer; it meant the absence of evidence of cancer on film.

A needle biopsy confirmed the lump was breast cancer, and a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, also detected cancer. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed another cancer in my lymph nodes. I had a mastectomy and lymphadenectomy, which ultimately showed that I actually had two tumors in the breast and two in my lymph nodes under my armpit. Mammograms never did show any of my cancer.

Now that I am a cancer survivor, I advocate that women should be tested earlier than 40 because more and more younger women are getting breast cancer now. Many people have said that I was too young to have cancer. I was not too young. It’s never too early. Early detection truly saves lives because it is significantly easier to treat cancer when it remains small or has not spread.

It’s important for women to request and push for a breast MRI if their doctor determines that they have dense breast tissue. If a woman has dense breast tissue like me, then cancers may not show up on a mammogram. Mine didn’t.

Are you dense? The Breast Density Notification Law, which went into effect this year, is designed to improve breast cancer detection by requiring health care facilities to notify women categorized as having dense breast tissue about their condition.

Notification Required by Bill 1538
Your mammogram shows that your breast tissue is dense. Dense breast tissue is common and is not abnormal. However, dense breast tissue can make it harder to evaluate the results of your mammogram and may also be associated with an increased risk of breast   cancer.
This   information about the results of your mammogram is given to you to raise your awareness and to inform your conversations with your doctor. Together, you can decide which screening options are right for you. A report of your results was sent to your physician.

The most important thing, however, is to check yourself regularly. That is how I found mine. I am signed up at Be Aware Foundation for a monthly reminder. My breast surgeon, Dr. John West, co-founded this organization to save lives by educating and inspiring women to follow early detection guidelines for breast cancer.

If you would like to read more about my cancer story as a mom dealing with breast cancer while raising two young boys, look for Consider the Butterfly, Emerging from the Cancer Chrysalis on Amazon. I share how I answered my son’s questions: “Mama, what is cancer? Mama, can I hug you? Mama, will you die?” Here is what Dr. West has to say about my story:

“I performed surgery to save Suzanne from physical cancer. Suzanne shares how God performed surgery to save her from spiritual cancer. Patients need encouragement that they too can fight this ugly disease. I will definitely recommend this book of hope to my patients.” — Dr. John West, Breast Surgeon, “Best Doctor in America”, “Best Doctor in Orange County”, Co-founder of Be Aware Foundation, Guest Speaker on The Dr. Oz Show.

Flight — Evidence of God in Creation

by admin on September 30, 2013

Saturday I watched the premiere of Flight: The Genius of Birds. Like Illustra Media’s previous movie, Metamorphosis, this movie illustrates beautifully how birds are skillfully engineered in order to fly. Amazing! I highly recommend this movie.

God’s Spirit Lives!

by admin on June 4, 2012

My mother recently had heart surgery. She now has multiple stents working to keep her arteries open. My dad has Alzheimer’s disease. He couldn’t even remember the next day that she was in the hospital. He can’t care for himself. But, when we prayed over my mom, he became emotional and said “Amen!” The last time she was in the hospital, he raised his hands up to God and we prayed over her, just at the time she was having a heart attack (but we didn’t know it until later). I asked him after if he remembered raising his hands, because this is not an act of worship typical for him. He said he wanted her to know that the presence of the Lord was there with her.

Even when our bodies are no longer working as they should, God’s Spirit lives inside us working perfectly. My Heavenly Father still gives my earthy father His Holy Spirit to comfort and guide. Thank you, Lord!
